The departure of the Tirupati-Puducherry Passenger train was delayed by a few minutes on Friday because of a court attachment proceeding.
Inquiries reveal that Mumtaz Begum, wife of late Abdul of Baluchetty Chatram, had approached the Sub-Court, Kancheepuram, stating that an order of hiked compensation passed in a civil suit relating to the acquisition of land for a railway project in 1996, when an acre of land was acquired from late Abdul, had not been complied with by the Central and State governments. Hence, the Sub-Court issued an order of attachment of government properties in favour of the petitioner, who was entitled to receive ₹37.66 lakh as compensation fixed by the court.
In the list of properties to be attached in favour of Ms. Mumtaz was the engine of Tirupati-Puducherry train passing through Kancheepuram, with respect to the Central government, and two cars and tables and chairs from the Collectorate.
When the court staff along with the legal representatives of the petitioner reached the Kancheepuram station to attach the engine, they received a call from the revenue authorities making a request for the postponement of the attachment proceedings by a day or two, since steps had been taken to disburse compensation to the petitioner in a few days.
