Papuans on Saturday commemorated the 57th anniversary of the failed efforts by Papuan tribal chiefs to declare independence from Dutch colonial rule, in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia with a rally.

Indonesia took over West Papua from Dutch colonial rule in 1963 and formalized its sovereignty over the region in 1969 through a vote by about 1,000 community leaders, which critics dismissed as a sham. More than two years on, Philippine president Rodrigo Dutertes drug war continues despite widespread criticisms and global condemnation.

Nearly 5,000 people were reported to have been killed by police in what they tag as legitimate operations. Thousands more have been killed by unoficial militias since Duterte promised to rid the country of the problem of illegal drugs in six months time by killing hundreds of thousands since he assumed the highest seat of power. While security forces enjoy a promised presidential protection from prosecution, a local court recently sentenced three police officers for the murder of a 17-year-old boy, the first ever conviction by the courts under the governments war on drugs.
