3 new animal species arrive at Vizag Zoo

Updated Date: 2/12/2021

Category: vizag news

In a collaborative animal exchange programme, between Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), Visakhapatnam, and National Zoological Park (NZP), New Delhi, Vizag zoo is all set to welcome new species from the animal kingdom soon.

According to a press release from IGZP Vizag, the two new species of animals are the Bengal Fox and Himalayan Goral. Additionally, a male Nilgais (Blue Bulls) has been brought to pair with the already present females Nilgai so as to ensure that there is further breeding. All basic needs of the animals are being met and it is close to its natural behaviour.

The newly brought animals will be kept in the quarantine facility of the zoo as per the regular procedure.  Only after meeting the requirements, mentioned in the animal exchange procedure, the new species of animals will be released into their respective enclosures. After the quarantine period, IGZP will announce the date from when visitors will be able to see the new entrants at Vizag zoo.

This animal exchange programme was approved by Central Zoo Authority in April 2021. However, due to the Covid-19 second wave, monsoons and then the frequent cyclonic rains, there has been a delay in the transportation of animals. This exchange is being executed in 2 phases as there are more animals to be brought from Delhi Zoo to IGZP and there also is a threat of Bird flu in the current period. The remaining species will be brought in the month of February 2022 after the threat of Avian influenza fades away.

Currently, IGZP has two Hippopotamuses, a mother-son duo. Therefore, for breeding purposes, Vizag Zoo will be getting one more Hippopotamus from NZP, New Delhi. The remaining species, which are yet to be received, are six pairs of Sangai, two pairs of White Ibis, one pair of Silver Pheasant, Kalij Pheasants (one male and two females), and one pair of Swamp Deer. In exchange, Vizag Zoo will spare two Wild Dogs, one Striped Hyena, one Sacred Baboon and 15 Star Tortoises to NZP, New Delhi.
