From young maiden to queen to mother to widow to warrior — Kangana Ranaut s role as Rani Laxmibai in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi goes through the gamut.
The trailor for the film, which was released late on Tuesday evening, showcases Ranaut as Lakshmibai in all her sword-wielding glory. The three-minute-long trailer keeps nothing under wraps. We see Rani Lakshmibai, named Manikarnika at birth, at every stage in life, including till the end when she straps her child to her back and rides out to battle.
There are enough battle scenes in it that the trailer seems to suggest a heavy Bajirao-Baahubali hangover, but Ranaut looks unfazed and focused throughout.
In fact, there s a scene in the trailer, a move almost identical to Ranveer Singh s Peshwa Bajirao in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial Bajirao Mastani.
And if there are any echoes to the two-part Telugu epic Baahubali starring Prabhas, it could be because the story s written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad, who penned the scripts for both the films.
Will Ranaut, who is also credited with co-directing the film, be able to take on the likes of Ranveer and Prabhas at the box office? We ll know that only when the film releases, but she seems more than up to the task, going by the trailer.
