The Supreme Court s verdict on the Rafale deal led to early adjournments of both Houses of Parliament, with the government demanding an apology from the Congress over its allegations and the Congress insisting on a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe.
As soon as question hour began in the Lok Sabha, Opposition members trooped into the well carrying placards and raising various issues, including the Rafale deal. Boosted by the Supreme Court order, which gave a clean chit to the government, BJP members stood up and raised slogans against the Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narendra Singh Tomar demanded an apology from Mr. Gandhi.
Two Bills introduced
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan first adjourned the House till noon and after the introduction of two Bills — the Indian Medical Council Amendment Bill, 2018 and the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2018 introduced by Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar respectively — adjourned for the day as the uproar continued unabated.
Members of the AIADMK protested over the construction of a dam by Karnataka on the Cauvery and and those of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on special status for Andhra Pradesh.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Mr. Gandhi misled the nation on the issue for political gains and should apologise.
The Rajya Sabha too saw an uproar over various issues, including Rafale, protection of Cauvery delta farmers and the Bulandshahr violence. The BJP and Congress members faced off with the former demanding an apology from Mr. Gandhi and the latter a JPC probe.
The protesters did not relent despite requests by Deputy Chairman Harivansh to allow proceedings and the House was adjourned till 11.30 a.m. After resumption, the protests continued. The House was then adjourned for the day.
