Report traffic rule violations through cellphones, win gifts

Updated Date: 12/4/2018

Category: Information News

Click pictures or record videos and upload on ‘Eagle Eye’ app

Taking citizen’s involvement in the enforcement road safety regulations to a new high, the City Police is all set to launch a special app through which one can report traffic violation cases and win gifts such as motorcycles, household items or gift hampers.

According to police, the app, called ‘Eagle Eye’, which has been exclusively designed to report traffic rule violations, will be launched shortly. Designed by the Tech team of the City Police, the app is simple to operate.

How it works

“Be it driving on the wrong side, jumping a traffic signal, triple riding or driving without wearing a helmet, what one needs to do is to click a picture or record a video and upload it on the app,” says DCP (Law and Order) K. Fakkeerappa, who led the Tech Team that designed the ‘Eagle Eye’.

The violations can be clicked or recorded through cellphones. If the facial features of the violator and vehicle registration are captured clearly, the picture or the video will be used as a proof before an e-challan is issued the violator, explains the DCP.

The City Police already have launched a slew of tech initiatives for lodging complaints such as exclusive WhatsApp number, Facebook page, Abhayam and I-Clik among others.

“The moment the pictures or the videos are uploaded on the app, it will be cross-checked by our team and only after which we will issue challans against the violators,” says ACP (Traffic) Kinjarapu Prabhakar.

Apart from recording traffic violations, the data collected from the app can be used to analyse traffic issues such as identifying areas prone to traffic snarls and checking with the database to ascertain if a vehicle is a stolen one and the violator is a habitual offender, explains Mr. Fakkeerappa.

Reward points

Every time a person uploads a violation, he or she earns reward points. For example, the reward point for signal jumping may be fixed at 10 and five for rash driving. As the citizens keep uploading the pictures or video footage, the reward points keep accumulating in their accounts, said Mr. Fakkeerappa.

To make it a workable model, the police intents to set a base reward point between 200 to 300 points and then conduct a lucky draw for all those who reach the base point level.

It’s learnt that a few corporate companies have come forward to sponsor the gifts. The app is undergoing trials with traffic beat constables. A proposal has been sent to DGP R.P. Thakur flor its launch, he added.
