Hi Sandeep,

Before you write GRE, it is important to assess your present skills. Also estimate the total time that u can allocate toward preparation. Reading editorial columns English newspapers (Hindu or Times of India preferably) is MUST and a very good way to kick-off. Try to buy the book "Word power made easy" by Norman Lewis. I feel that this book is very good, atleast for starters.

Hi Group,
   what is the group opinion about the relevancy of writing GRE under current conditions.

- Many of the students who have completed MS in US are still jobless
- The cost of doing MS is high as now it is becoming to difficult to get scholar ships, RA etc.,
- Doing Mtech in IITs, Pilani etc.. is a good option
- Taking lot of our money to foreign land..
- Most importantly staying away from friends and parents and more away from mother land
- Jobs are more in India than in US , thanks to outsourcing
- Btechs have good job openings now in infosys,TCS such big companies
- Better to live as a king than as a poor man. I see many of my friends are not having proper lunch there.. atleast in UK

But writing GRE will fetch you
- easy pass in entrance exams by Infosys etc...
- fastens your brain thinking logically

I am inviting all of you, with inetresting technical discussion on linux.
To initiate that, I am starting with "X Window system".
X window system is a server, client based system. Here server is Xserver,clients are GUI based applications. so to run GUI based applications on your unix system X server must be running.
What is Xserver?
   Xserver is the server which shares display resource(for example monitor) among different GUI applications. These applications may not be running on your local machine. They may be running on remote machine. But we see corresponding application Window on our screen. GUI based applications are generally called X11 applications. To write X11 applications we have to include X11.h and we have to link with -lX11. Writing applications with X11 interface is low level. Lot of tollkits are developed based on t he X11. For example MOTIF,QT, GTK+, OPENGL. By using these toolkits, we can easily write GUI applications using lanuages c,c++.
   When we click on window or enter input text, the corresponding event is dispatched to application belongs to the window.Depending upon the event, application reacts.
   This programming model is called event driven programming model. All GUI based applications are event driven programs. They are waiting for events, and reacts according to event.
   In dispatching events to applications X Server takes the help of WINDOW MANAGER. Window manager is the X11 aplication which gives look to windows, manges the placement of windows. xfce,window maker are example window managers.
   This is just brief overview.
